Grand Tour in the heart of Sicily
Caltanissetta is a town situated in the very heart of Sicily, a land where a warm and comforting sun constantly shines, populated by people forged by an intense history. In the Gabara mines, the unique theatrical representation, taken from one of Pirandello's masterpieces, "Ciaula scopre la luna" ("Ciaula discovers the moon"), will take us back in time to observe the bitter life of the Nissen miners during the first years of 1900.
The tasting workshop of the traditional pastries will lead us to discover a multitude of ever-changing and surprising flavours, colours and scents.
It surely will be fascinating to visit the winery owned by Lombardo's family, guardian and witness of ancient traditions, that still to this day with great passion and professionalism produces wines of excellence. A great pride for the town.

THE PROGRAM
Day of arrival: arrival in Caltanissetta and accommodation in the hotel, welcome cocktail will be served, dinner in a typical restaurant and overnight stay;
1° day
Departure in the morning to partake the "from pre-Hellenic history to the early Middle Ages" Tour;
- Guided visit to the archaeological museum (2- hours ca.): Because of its finest archaeological collections, the structure is considered one of the principal science museums on the island. The collection offers a complete and clear picture of the culture of the native Sicane populations, who used to live in this territory before and after the foundation of the greek's colony in the village of Gela on the coast (689/688 a.C).
- Guided visit to Santo Spirito's abbey (1-hour ca.): Not too far away from the village's centre, an ancient church token of dedication and devotion to the Spirito Santo (the Holy Spirit) that dates back to the Arab-Normann civilizations.
Lunch in a typical Sicilian restaurant;
In the afternoon, departure to the first stop of the "Mining period" tour;
- Guided visit to the old "persian" sulfur mine of Gabara (3-hour ca.): During the walk, the slopes from which the miners descended or transported the extracted minerals will be visited, "calcheroni" and "forni Gill"
Return to the hotel, dinner time in a "nissena" (in Caltanissetta town) accommodation.
2° day
Departure in the morning to partake the "quality and local agro-food";
- Guided visit to the "Tenute Lombardo" winery and the "Sua Altezza" Masseria (4-hour ca.); The Lombardo estate is a vivid reality in the winemaking industry in Sicily, 30 hectares of land that is owned by the Lombardo's brothers situated in-between of San Cataldo and Serradifalco villages. The structure is located 50 km from the sea, 650 meters above sea level, the land is full of limestone stones and the indigenous varieties of wines, such as Catarratto and Nero D'Avola, had given to the Lombardo estate a unique and elegant image.
Lunch break, wine and typical products of excellency tasting
In the afternoon there will be a guided tasting of some typical local pastries
- practical laboratory of production and tasting of the "torrone nisseno" (nougat) and "Rollò" (2-hour ca.)
Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay in a historical Masseria.
3° day
Departure in the morning to partake in the "religious rites and sites" tour;
- Guided visit to the Santa Maria La Nova cathedral (1-hour ca.)
Caltanissetta's main town square is named after Garibaldi and it's dominated by the cathedral's facade. Build around half 1500 to fulfil the new urbanistic urges, it was named after Santa Maria La Nova to be distinguished from the previous cathedral, Santa Maria la Vetere
Lunch break, wine and typical local products of excellency tasting;
- Guided visit to the Vare museum (1-hour ca.)
The small museum is located inside the San Pio X church that houses fifteen of the sixteen majestic statuary groups (Vare). The statues represent the passion and death of Jesus Christ, made in the second half of 1800 by Neapolitan sculptors Francesco e Vincenzo Bingardi, and are the main attraction during the Holy Thursday evening procession.

In the afternoon there will be the second stop of "the mining period" tour;
- Guided visit to the archaeological museum (1-hour and 30 min. ca.)
The Sebastiano Mottura mineralogical, paleontological and sulfur museum, also known as Caltanissetta's mineralogical museum, houses a great ores and fossils collection. This permanent exposition is dedicated to the mining technology for the extraction of sulfur in Sicily.
- Departure for the "arab-normann side Caltanissetta" tour;
- Guided visit of the Moncada palace (1-hour and 30 min. ca.)
In the very centre of the city, stands a majestic yet incomplete structure. Despite its conditions, the palace is still accessible. under the responsibility of Carlo D'Aprile, famous architect of the Senate of Palermo, the construction of the building took on but was continued by a Capuchin friar Pietro da Genova. The first stone was
set during the spring of 1651.
